Malaria prevention in Kenya: what you should know
2025-07-01
4 min

Malaria remains a risk in many regions of Kenya. Prevention starts with avoiding mosquito bites: use treated bed nets, apply repellents containing DEET or picaridin, and wear long sleeves from dusk.
Do I need prophylaxis?
If you’re traveling to high-risk areas, talk to a clinician or pharmacist about chemoprophylaxis options, timing, and possible side effects. Not all areas require prophylaxis; local guidance matters.
Test early if unwell
- Fever, chills, body aches, and fatigue warrant a malaria test.
- Rapid diagnostic tests are widely available; seek medical attention promptly.
- Do not self-medicate with antimalarials without guidance.
